Fall Trend Alert: Nail Art

As a teenager, I cared a lot about "my look."  But really, the mark of my sartorial style was showcased in the form of acrylic nails, 10 uncomfortably long glued on nails, with designs so intricate, it would take my nail technician at least two hours to perfect them. That was more than a decade ago, which is why recently I was a bit surprised to see the resurgence of nail design, not only for teenage girls in urban cities, but mainstream America too.

Flip through the latest fashion magazines and you’ll see models walking the runway with nail designs that compliment the complexities of the clothes they’re wearing. The designs are fun and funky, with detailed textures, jewels and even fabrics. Which makes me wonder, does this trend translate beyond 16-year-old girls? According to at least two top nail art bloggers, the answer is yes.

“Many of the runway trends we've seen are very wearable in the real world," says Sarah Waite, founder of Chalkboardnails.com. "Lace, half moons, and crystal embellishments all made an appearance. Some of the more outlandish nail looks can also be translated for everyday wear by choosing jewel tones and metallic gold for an on-trend fall palette.”

Suzann Frazier, founder of Amateurmanicure.com, says pop culture references on nails are also especially popular for those of a “certain age” – translation, beyond 30. Some of her most popular designs are the Seattle skyline and of course during game weekends, the Seahawks emblem. “I think there’s just something about seeing iconic movies, locations, and other pop culture cornerstones on nails that really excites people—I know it excites me!”

Frazier says new tools also make nail art more convenient.  Gone are the days when nail art lovers have to spent 2 hours in a shop to get the latest look. Both independent and big-name brands are creating products like pre-cut vinyl stencil stickers and nail stamping kits that make it easy to whip up a perfect animal print or zigzag French tips.

I decided to give this trend a try, opting for the one sparkly nail trend on my ring finger. It felt fun and flirty, without the commitement of a full on manicured design. Who knows, I might just take a deeper plunge soon - gameday is right around the corner.
