Is Apple Pay About to Change the Way You Buy Beauty Products?


If the thought of pulling out your wallet and credit card to pay for something seems arduous—then you need to check yourself. But that's not to say we're not sympathetic, and help may be on the way: Apple is aiming to make your wallet obsolete. Today they’re launching Apple Pay, and it’s going to change the way you shop.

Apple Pay is a new tool that allows you to pay for stuff both online and in-store with your iPhone 6 or 6 plus (sorry 5ers, you’ll need to upgrade). The new phones are built with a near-field communication (NFC) chip that securely stores your payment information. You hold the phone up to the reader at checkout, put your finger on the button, and that’s it. Your phone will beep or vibrate to let you know it worked.

So how is this going to change the way you shop? For starters, you can check out a whole lot faster. I can’t be the only one whose handbag seems like a black hole. I’ve spent far too much time rummaging through my bag looking for my wallet, keys, whatever, but I always seem to have my phone in my hand. Plus, Apple is launching the service with some of our favorite beauty retailers: Bloomingdale’s, Sephora, Macy’s, Walgreens, Duane Reade, Whole Foods, and Urban Outfitters (and a bunch of other nonbeauty stores, too). Can we propose that these stores create a fast pass for those of us paying with Apple Pay? I hate waiting in an endless checkout line when all I'm buying is one tube of mascara.

And from what we glean, Apple Pay is secure (unlike, ahem, iCloud). Your credit card information, purchases, and account information are not stored on your phone or Apple servers, so if your phone is ever misplaced or worse, your accounts are safe.

So if you have a new iPhone, expect a software update today for iOS 8.1. You’ll need to actually download it to pay with Apple Pay.
